Door Alarms are Cutting Costs for Weis Markets
A test project conducted by Danfoss at Weis Markets’ Mt. Airy, Md., store has helped the supermarket chain to identify a source of significant energy waste. Wanting to see how the behavior of their employees might change, Weis elected to install alarms on walk-in cooler and freezer doors. First, Danfoss mounted counters on all of the store’s walk-in cooler and freezer doors and recorded the number of minutes the doors were left open over a 30-day period. Then, Modularm door alarms were installed and connected to the store’s rack controllers for monitoring. When a door is left open for 10 minutes, the alarm will beep and a strobe light will flash. After 20 minutes, a local refrigeration alarm is sent via the rack controller.

After collecting 30 days of data, Danfoss’ Steve Renz was able to report to Weis that the amount of time the walk-in cooler and freezer doors were left open decreased by 63% after the alarm installation. This equates to energy savings of more than $22,500 per year for a single store – which is positive for Weis who is continuously seeking to reduce energy use and improve efficiency in all of their stores throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and West Virginia.

Mars Super Markets Realize Super Savings with Help of Danfoss Energy Audits
Mars Super Markets employs nearly 1,700 people and operates 17 retail stores in the greater Baltimore, Md., area, serviced by the company’s Baltimore-based 300,000-square-foot distribution center. In 2010, the company initiated an energy efficiency program to reduce costs and improve operations across its entire portfolio of buildings – offices, retail stores and distribution center.

Mars Super Markets met its objective, thanks in large part to multiple rebate offerings from the Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE) “Smart Energy Savers” program, managed by ICF-International. But Mars Super Markets did not go about the complicated process of applying for and securing those rebates on their own. Instead, they relied on Danfoss to work with ICF and help the grocery chain secure significant rebates.

Road to rebates begins with audit and re-commissioning
“As a first step, we audited each of the Mars Super Markets stores and the distribution center,” recalled Norm Masse, senior account manager, Danfoss, and account manager for this project. “Through the audit process we identified and evaluated the equipment in each facility and used this information to recommend projects that offered the best potential for improving efficiencies and energy use.”

CO2: Brochure myths/facts
In recent years, CO2 has become an increasingly important refrigerant in a number of applications. Most important to this development, is that from an environmental and safety perspective, CO2 is one of the few sustainable refrigerants for supermarket systems. However, CO2 is not a drop-in replacement for all existing refrigerants, and its attractiveness should be evaluated for each application based on TEWI (Total Equivalent Warming Impact) and life-time cost.

Danfoss considers CO2 among the most attractive refrigerants in industrial refrigeration and food retail applications. This is also confirmed by developments seen in the refrigeration marketplace, in particular in areas where there is a greater focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions Danfoss offers a variety of products for all CO2 applications, including subcritical, transcritical, pump-circulated and hybrid systems.
